Holme Hale Garden, Thetford

Summer 2024

In June, I had the immense pleasure and honour of visiting and capturing the enchanting gardens of Holme Hale. I had the garden to myself, and so immersed myself for an incredible 5 hours or so whilst waiting perchance for thin white cloud to soften the harsh bright sunlight. Sadly it didn't, and so I created these images just before the golden-hour, just before having to depart for an early check-in with my overnight accommodation. New to garden photography is showing me that dedication, patience and hope are some of the qualities required by photographers and gardeners alike. It takes time to get to know a garden, see its true personality, how it presents itself through each changing season through light and palette. I appreciate how it can take months, leading into years to create images that reflect a garden in all its glory. But that, when all the ingredients come together, is when the magic happens.

I  focused my time and photography on the wonderful walled garden, designed by one of my most favourite of garden designers, the revered Arne Maynard.

Captured on traditional analogue-film and a vintage film camera.
